Usui and Karuna® Reiki

Usui Shiki Ryoho is a Japanese Healing Art, which was founded by Mikao Usui about one hundred years ago. His practice grew, and eventually Reiki was introduced out of Japan via Hawaii in 1937 by Hawayo Takata Sensei.

Reiki can be used for general wellness as well as for specific issues. It works by assisting to reduce stress, which in turn may create an environment within the body where healing more easily is facilitated. This system of natural healing energizes and balances on all levels with the energy of Reiki, which means “life energy”. It is somewhat similar to the concept of Qi in the Chinese healing arts; yet, less taxing on the pracititioner.
Reiki helps people move towards harmony, clarity and strength. These are essential preconditions for supporting the healing of any issue or problem.

The touch and energy of Reiki is simple, pleasant, natural and totally safe for anyone, and can be given along with any conventional or alternative treatment. Reiki is not related to religion. It is a relaxation technique of light touch, which respects all philosophical and religious paths and can be combined with all beliefs.

A Reiki session is performed on a massage table and you, the client, are always fully clothed. Sessions are usually performed with the client lying face up and resting comfortably. Soft background music is often added to benefit the client’s relaxation.

This particular form of Reiki is called Usui Shiki Ryoho, and is called as such after the founding father, Mikao Usui. Usui utilized this system in treating his patients effectively, while at the same time treating them with the utmost ethical respect. Pentad’s practice is in direct lineage to Mikao Usui, whose heritage has been handed down along a long line of Reiki Masters throughout the years.

My personal training was  a 5 year study under the tutelege of my Teacher, Siw Torill Østensen. Siw is among the 'best of the best' in Norway. She has paved the way for the healing arts in the country, always striving for quality. After these first five years, I soloed as a practitioner and Teacher in my own right, my office relocating to Houston, Texas.

In 2007, I traveled to Seattle to study Karuna Reiki with founder William Rand. This experience was a tremendous milestone not only in my personal development and understanding of Reiki as a facilitator of healing, but also of natural health in general. It is Karuna Reiki I now utilize the majority of time when working with clients. Karuna tackles the deep-seeded and difficult issues that often lead to our distress, unhappiness, and illness.

The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth

Karuna Reiki®

The system av Karuna Reiki® was founded by Usui Master and my Teacher, William Rand. His base is in the USA. Rand holds an important position in the Reiki world. His own learning, in lineage terms, is quite close to Mrs. Takata and Reiki's passage out of Japan. Rand's personal travels also led him back to Japan in search of answers regarding the origins of Reiki, historical facts, and knowledge about Mikao Usui. All of his efforts his first years was to better understand, and to test the system within the realm of his capacity. He is respected for his questioning nature, and search for truth.

Rand's system of Karuna Reiki® is a step beyond the Usui system. A minimum of six months to one year experience as an Usui Master is mandatory before an application is admissable to study Karuna® with William Rand. To say that these seminars are intense and intensive, is an understatement. The higher level development that is experienced during the training must be balanced by a long practice of grounding, also deep understanding of self and Reiki as a system of practice. Thus, the reason behind the requirement of established practice before applying for training.

Karuna is a Sanskrit word and it is used in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is translated to mean any action that is undertaken to diminish the suffering of others and could also be translated as "compassionate action." When individuals experience greater insight, sometimes called enlightenment, they report the experience that all living things are, '
one'. Therefore, it is natural to extend compassionate action or Karuna to everyone without distinction because we are all one.

As we help others and aid them in their healing process, everyone benefits. Because of the oneness of all, it is understood that Karuna is not only extended to others out of love, but also because it is the entirely logical thing to do. In the same way that you would want to heal your own wounds, you would also want the wounds of others to heal. It is also stated in the Buddhist literature that Karuna must be accompanied by parjna, meaning wisdom, in order to have the right effect.

As a Karuna® Master, I am also a registered teacher with, The International Center for Reiki Training.
